Allied Health Professions: Requirements and registration

Occupational Therapist

Occupational therapists work with people to help them overcome physical, psychological or social problems arising from illness or disability.

Entry Requirements

Training usually consists of three or four years full-time study leading to a BSc in Occupational Therpay. A two year accelerated course is available for those who already have a relevant first degree.

Applications should be made via UCAS .

To gain entry on the degree you will need 5 GCSE passes and a minimum of 2, usually 3, A levels, including one in a science subject. Qualifications such as BTEC, GNVQ or validated access courses are usually considered instead of A levels.

Universities have a number of NHS-funded places for degree-level students, in which case your share of the tuition fees will be paid for you. You would also be eligible for a non-means tested student loan and might be eligible for a means-tested NHS bursary.

On completion of a BSc in Occupational Therapy you become eligible to apply for the state registration necessary to work in the NHS or social services. This is provided by the Health Professions Council (HPC) .
